Hello!
I’m writing this on a Sunday morning after walking my dog, refilling the hummingbird feeder, and plopping myself down here at the screen with a cup of lukewarm coffee with almond milk (I prefer cream but I’m giving it a shot).
To quickly address the elephant in the room; the start of my online comic series, ambiguously titled Making Comic X, where you’ll get to watch me build a comic from the ground up in real time, has been further delayed. I apologize to anyone who might have signed up to this newsletter for that specific reason. Everything else I’ve been working on over the last couple of years has hit overdrive in a big way recently, which I wasn’t entirely expecting. But rest assured, MCX is still coming but it’s difficult to say exactly when my calendar will allow for it.
So why are we here?!
LOTUS LAND, my first creator-owned series since LITTLE BIRD, launches from BOOM! Studios on November 15th and it’s a BIG deal (at least to me).
Here’s the headline from the Popverse announcement a week or so ago, and a link to the full article: LOTUS LAND announcement on Popverse
"Dystopian science fiction meets existential romanticism as Darcy Van Poelgeest — writer of critically acclaimed Image Comics series Little Bird — returns to comics at Boom! Studios for a new series the publisher describes as “Old Dog meets Blade Runner.”
LOTUS LAND is something that’s existed in my mind for nearly ten years in one form or another, and I’m thrilled that it’ll finally be out in the world on November 15th. You are able to preorder NOW at your local comic shop and I’d highly encourage you to do so because it’s quite likely to sell out.
If you already have a local comic shop that you frequent, great. Call them today!
If you’re not sure where that might be, there’s a nifty tool that allows you to find the closest one to where you live - Comic Shop Locator. It’s a genius little tool where you just punch in your postal/zip code and BAM! - location and contact for the closest comic shop to where you live or work. Just call them up or stop in and tell them you want a ticket to LOTUS LAND from publisher BOOM Studios!
Everyone involved is in the creation of this series is digging deep to bring you the best possible version of this story; artist Caio Filipe has taken something quite complex and made it feel effortless. He’s going to be a star. Colourist, Patricio Delpeche is adding a layer of depth to the story that, combined with Caio style, gives us something I haven’t really seen before. Letterer, Nate Piekos is bringing character performances to life in a way that feels completely at ease in the strangeness of this world, while also somehow grounding it all at the same time. And main covers by Alex Eckman-Lawn are haunting and beautiful, a perfect reflection of the story we’ve crafted.
That’s all I’ll say for now but please give this book a chance, it’s something that’s been delicately constructed with loads of love.
Below are two gorgeous variant covers for the first issue. Get one, or get them all - I’d just be thrilled to have you along! Feel free to leave a comment with any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them! - DVP
Looks bloody amazing, mate.
Can’t wait to check this book out!
