Over the next few months I’ll be reflecting on my own comics origin story and exploring what it was that cemented my love of the medium through some core memories from my childhood. It’ll be fun, nostalgic, and (surprising absolutely no one) non-linear.
Sadly, I don’t remember my very first comic, or the specific moment I discovered comics, but I’m going to guess that it was something I pulled off a spinner rack at a corner store. And prior to that, probably Calvin and Hobbes. I will say that if G.I. Joe wasn’t my first comic, it was certainly one of them, and being an avid collector/player of the action figures, and enthusiastic viewer of the cartoon, this would have been a logical transition point into the world of comics.
I’m going to guess it would have been late 1986 or early ‘87 when I purchased my first comic shortly after moving to BC. Being the new kid, and a pretty shy one, I had no close friends in those early years so reading comics filled a kind of void and I was hooked right from the start.
I know that’s brief but there’s lots to cover this month I’ll leave it there for now with what I beleive *might* have been my first G.I Joe comic.
LOTUS LAND - No One Ever Says Goodbye.
Well, unfortunately it really is time to say goodbye with LOTUS LAND #6, the final issue of the series. All I can say is that it was a thrill to piece this puzzle together and I’m so proud of how it all turned out, and thankful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with everyone who brought it to life.
But it’s really the people that show up monthly to support the series that I owe my deepest gratitude - they (hopefully that includes you) are what allowed for this story to actually be told, and for that I’m just so damn thankful.
Every story I get to tell is a gift in my life...
NOW - feast your eyes on these final covers - in store on April 17th! The heartbreaking conclusion to LOTUS LAND, No One Ever Says Goodbye.
When the devastating secrets of the Keeper Program and the drowning girl are finally revealed, Bennie will have to make an impossible decision with millions of lives at stake, but what will it cost him?
PRECIOUS METAL - #1.
It’s now possible to order the first issue of PRECIOUS METAL #1, and I am damn near begging you to do so. From what I understand, comics overall are in a bit of a sales slump, with some notable exceptions, so when it comes to indie comics it’s more important then ever to pre-order the ones you’d like to read and support. If you don’t pre-order it then those numbers don’t get passed on to the publisher/distributor, and as a result they print fewer copies. So getting those orders in early are really the key to ensuring you get a copy because they’re just not printing as many extra copies these days for late comers.
If you’re not aware of a local comics shop to place your order then there’s this handy tool. https://www.comicshoplocator.com/StoreLocator
Simply punch in your postal/zip code and it’ll give you options to contact the closest comic shop in your area. Then give them a shout and let them know you NEED a copy of PRECIOUS METAL #1
Precious Metal #1 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, June 5.
